Painted by ANDO

The Silver City Art Centre & Silver City Mint is an amazing world class draw card for Broken Hill. The interior has been planned and constructed by owner Chris Anderson who runs the business with wife Jan. The Centre is the home of the mighty canvas Chris has hung for his talented artist brother Ando who has painted 'The Big Picture'.

The world's largest painting on canvas, "The Big Picture" is 100 metres long and over 12 metres high and painted with nine tonnes of paint.

After walking through a simulated Aboriginal cave, visitors venture onto a timber viewing platform which is surrounded by the painting, thus giving the impression of walking into the picture.

It took Ando over 2 years (all hours of the day & night) to cover the massive canvas which is painted in acrylic in his highly realistic style. The painting features natural and man made landmarks within 300km of Broken Hill, including the Sculpture Symposium, the Pinnacles, Flinders Ranges, Mundi Mundi Plains, the Barrier Ranges, White Cliffs, Mutawintjl, Menindee Lakes and Broken Hill and the Line of Lode.

Other features Chris has included in this wonderland are:

  • A spectacular array of Broken Hill minerals displayed in a simulated underground mining timber stope. Large range of minerals for sale.
  • The mint section has an extensive range of jewellery made from Broken Hill silver.
  • Beautiful opal jewellery displayed in a constructed underground opal mine featuring White Cliffs.
  • Hand made items of pottery, ceramics and glass.
  • Galleries hung with a wonderful collection of original paintings and lithographs by Ando Anderson and many other well-known Broken Hill artists.
  • Indoor and outdoor function areas.
